Ambulance New Brunswick Assists in Delivering Two Babies within Four Days

(Sackville) – It was early on Wednesday morning, August 6th, 2008 when Ambulance New Brunswick (ANB) paramedics Eddie Cole and Michel Richard assisted Ms. Tina May Butler, from Point de Bute, New Brunswick, deliver her baby in the back of an ambulance while enroute to the hospital.

Ms. Butler was home just before 2 a.m. when she realized the baby might be born before she had time to get to the hospital.  ANB paramedics were able to assist her and her healthy baby was born at 2:33 a.m.

“We didn't quite make it to the hospital”, said Michel Richard, one of ANB paramedics responding to Ms. Butler’s call.  “While enroute, the baby decided it was time to come out."

Four days later, on August 10th, Ms. Liandra Fahey also received assistance from ANB’s staff.  This time, emergency medical dispatcher Corey Gallant provided valuable instructions over the phone which contributed to the birth of Ms. Fahey’s baby just before ANB paramedics Mike Frank and Ryan Steele arrived on scene.  The healthy baby of Ms. Fahey was born at 6:41 a.m.

Emergency medical dispatcher Corey Gallant explains that: "It’s not what you expect as your first call of the day, but I was glad to be able to help them. That’s what we are here for.”

ANB’s qualified personnel are trained to respond to various types of incidents; in these two cases, the outcomes were little bundles of joy.  Edgar Goulette, ANB’s Manager of Continuous Quality Improvement (CQI) made the announcement today in Sackville.  He presented each of the four paramedics as well as the emergency medical dispatcher involved in these calls with a stork pin.  Mr. Goulette also presented each of the mothers with a small gift on behalf of ANB.

ANB is dedicated to providing high-quality pre-hospital care for New Brunswickers. ANB is responsible for providing land and air ambulance services throughout New Brunswick. ANB has contracted with New Brunswick EMS, a subsidiary of Medavie EMS, member of the Medavie Blue Cross Group of Companies, to ensure delivery of these services under a long-term contract.
